Finnish electro-tropical ensemble Maajo delivers Sembè, a new EP to be released on March first.
After an acclaimed first EP, Tropic of Tulli, remixed by big names such as Luke Vibert and Dengue Dengue dengue, Maajo is back with a collaboration with Ismaila Sané.
Born in Coubalan, southern Senegal, Ismaila started his career as a dancer and percussionist in the 70’s. He has since pursued an extensive international career and worked with the likes of Jimi Tenor and Piirpauke. Now based in Finland, he worked with Maajo to deliver two powerful songs in Jola language, spoken in Casamance, Southern Senegal.
The track are tinged with the band’s afro-balearic signature, accentuated by Ismaila’s potent voice. “Sèmbè” is an off-beat mix of disco reggae grooves and dancehall rhythms while “Anaata” is a dark and mellow dub disco groover.
Sèmbè will be out on March first on Queen Nanny. Pre-order it on Bandcamp.
